Where’s Al Azhar Located ?
1- This is is the most famous Mosque in Cairo and in the Islamic world where students from over the world can come to complete their academic and theological studies.
2- It is also the oldest Islamic university in existence since 975 as well as the first Fatimid Mosque in Cairo and the most important center of teaching the Arabic language.
3- Gawhar el Sqly began construction of the mosque in 970 A.D during the reign of the Fatimid elkhlifa al maez lidiyn allah completed in 972 A.D .
4- The mosque considered of 3 Iwans surrounding the court , the largest of which was
the Quiblah iwan composed of 5 galleries.
5- The building was enlarged and restored mainly during the Mumluk period, it has a surface are 12000 square Meters and was the first monument built by the Mumluks just a year after having conquered Egypt .
6- One of the minarets was built by sultan Qaitbay in 1458 A.D , on its left , the second
minaret has 16 sides compared too-the minarets that have 8 sides only .
