Al Rifaii Mosque


Who built this mosque?


1- This famous Mosque was built by a woman princess Koshiar the mother of Khedive Ismail who opened the Suez Canal and was an energetic renovator of the city of Cairo completed in 1912 it stands to the north of Sultan Hassan Mosque.

2- The site chosen by princess Koshiar was the residence of Al Rifaii family which dates back to Imam Ahmed Al Rifaii renowned for spiritualism and their ability to master snakes and vipers , the mosque is named after Al Rifaii family, the building covers on area of 1,767 square meters .
3- It is flanked by 4 massive columns supporting the pointed arches that divide the mosque into 3 porticos .

4- On either side of the large dome are 2 marble columns one white and the other dark green .

5- The mosque houses the tombs of the royal family of Egypt from Khedive Ismail and his mother Koshiar up to king Farouk .

Museum of Islamic Art

1- The Museum was inaugurated in 1903 and houses some genuine masterpieces of Art .
2- Some designs represent Coptic symbols as the fish , as well as Islamic geometric designs .
3- There are also Majolica items of Mumluk era bearing mottoes and slogans of their troops and dating to the 16 century .
4- There rooms also contains on ottoman style free place that dates back to the 18th century
5- The rugs hanging on the walls are in different Turkish styles , The room also contains stones reproducing the decorations of the Ibn Tulun Mosque dating the 12th century.
6- Also displayed are Persian and Turkish turquoise porcelain 17th and 18th centuries as well as vases from showing Chinese in fluence 12th century and Chinese porcelain from Mumluk mosque .
