What does it do ?
At the time of the monarchy-Alexandria was the summer Capital of Egypt .
The king , the government and the foreign embassies was abandon the punishing heat of Cairo and seek Alexandria’s Mediterranean breezes.
At 1892 .. The palace was built by Khedive Abbas around the turn of the century in a Turkish_ Florentine style, the high central tower is a copy of that at Italian Palazzo Vecchio in Florence .
During the First World War the palace was turned to hospital. Edward Morgan Forster did work here then , gave lectures on ancient Alex , he was coming because he loved the place ... he came again for weekends ... it became a palace again after refurbishment be King Fouad I .
Though the palace self is closed to the public , for a small fee you are given the freedom during the hours of daylight to wander throughout its extensive parkland which is planted mostly with palms and rare trees .
Farouk was here... when the 1952 coup occurred in Cairo , he then fled to Ras El Teen where he abdicated... He was not in fact the last king of Egypt , his son reigned under the control of a regency council... King Fouad 2nd ... until 1953 when the country was declared a republic .
El Montaza palace , built in Turkish-Florentine style.. A fortune teller had told King Fouad I , that the letterF would bring for his family happy luck , so he named his daughters Fawzia - Faiza - Faika and Fathia and his only Son Farouk ... .
He in turn renamed Safinaz , his first wife , Farid by whom he had 3 daughters : Ferial - Fawzia and Fadia .
In 1951 Farouk married Nariman neglecting to change her name , and in January 1952 she born him his only son, the Letter F relegated to second place in Ahmed Fuad .
Just Six months later and Farouk was out of a job .
