What does it do ?

Montazah

At the time of the monarchy-Alexandria was the summer Capital of Egypt .

The king , the government and the foreign embassies was abandon the punishing heat of Cairo and seek Alexandria’s Mediterranean breezes.

The palace at Ras El Teen would then become the seat of government, while the royal family would take up residence at El Montazah Palace .

At 1892 .. The palace was built by Khedive Abbas around the turn of the century in a Turkish_ Florentine style, the high central tower is a copy of that at Italian Palazzo Vecchio in Florence .

During the First World War the palace was turned to hospital. Edward Morgan Forster did work here then , gave lectures on ancient Alex , he was coming because he loved the place ... he came again for weekends ... it became a palace again after refurbishment be King Fouad I .

Though the palace self is closed to the public , for a small fee you are given the freedom during the hours of daylight to wander throughout its extensive parkland which is planted mostly with palms and rare trees .

Abbas also built the salamlik , [ men’s quarters ] nearby in which to entertain his Austrian mistress , it is now a hotel and overlooks a lovely cove with swimming and water sports , sheltered to the east by the small tea island reached by a foot bridge .
A few scattered remains of an ancient settlement , lie about the island... on the west arm of the cove is the modern Palestine hotel, the long bay to the east of Montazah is MAAMOURA with a good sandy beach .

Farouk was here... when the 1952 coup occurred in Cairo , he then fled to Ras El Teen where he abdicated... He was not in fact the last king of Egypt , his son reigned under the control of a regency council... King Fouad 2nd ... until 1953 when the country was declared a republic .

El Montaza palace , built in Turkish-Florentine style.. A fortune teller had told King Fouad I , that the letterF would bring for his family happy luck , so he named his daughters Fawzia - Faiza - Faika and Fathia and his only Son Farouk ... .

He in turn renamed Safinaz , his first wife , Farid by whom he had 3 daughters : Ferial - Fawzia and Fadia .

In 1951 Farouk married Nariman neglecting to change her name , and in January 1952 she born him his only son, the Letter F relegated to second place in Ahmed Fuad .

Just Six months later and Farouk was out of a job .

The infant Ahmed reigned briefly as Fouad 2nd but it was too late .
Gamal Abd El Nasr who led the coup which overthrew the monarch did not come from a rural village, you can visit his birthplace on the way to El Montaza at 12 kannawaty street , south off Mostafa kamel street in the quiet lower middle class area of BAKOS .
Naser continued to live in Alex an he was 15 attending schools in the Ras El Teen and Attarine areas , before moving to Cairo , the house is as a museum, but hardly anyone knows it is there .
